Luis Feito (1929–2021) was a leading Spanish painter and a key figure in postwar European abstraction. Born in Madrid, he studied at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando before moving to Paris in the mid-1950s, where he immersed himself in the international avant-garde.
A founding member of the influential Spanish group El Paso (1957–1960), Feito played an important role in redefining Spanish art in the aftermath of the Civil War, promoting an experimental and non-academic approach aligned with Art Informel.
Feito’s work evolved from early figurative compositions to a highly personal form of abstraction characterized by rich textures, often incorporating sand and heavy impasto, and a restrained palette that later expanded to include his signature use of red. Over time, his compositions became increasingly simplified, frequently featuring circular or geometric forms influenced in part by Japanese aesthetics.
Internationally recognized, Feito exhibited at major venues including the Venice Biennale, Documenta, and the Guggenheim Museum. His work is held in significant museum collections worldwide, and he was the recipient of numerous honours, including the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
