RCA, OSA, CAS, CGP, CSGA, CSPWC, OC (1904-1974). Born in Barbados, Roberts studied at L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Montreal (1923-1925), and under John Sloan and Boardman Robinson at the Art Students’ League, New York City (1927-1929). He was an official war artist with the RCAF in England in 1943-1945 and also painted in France in 1953-1954. Working in oil, watercolour, pastel, gouache, charcoal, and pencil, his subjects include landscape, figures, still life, and interiors with nudes. Many of his landscapes depict the Laurentians and Eastern Townships in Quebec, and Georgian Bay in Ontario. He works in a loose expressionist style. In 1933-1936, he was resident artist at Queen’s University, Kingston. He lived in Fredericton, New Brunswick as a child; and taught in Ottawa and Kingston, Ontario; and at l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Montreal Quebec (1939-1952). He died in Montreal. He was a founding member of the Eastern Group of Painters and the Contemporary Arts Society.
